Lightly Salted - Taylor Brown

Lightly salted.

What is lightly salted? This motto is based off of Matthew 5: 13-16, where Jesus is teaching to crowds of people on a mountainside about salt and light. “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”

Jesus is telling the crowds, “you now know the truth, the truth of who I say I am. I give you strength for the days where you think you can’t go on. I give you hope when there’s no hope left. I show you love when no one else does. I am life, and I provide. So go, show these people the love I’ve shown you, teach them what I have taught you. What good is it to keep this to yourself? Share it with those who don’t know.”

You may be saying to yourself,  “I don’t have that authority, I’m not a preacher. I don’t know enough about the Bible.” False. You know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and that’s what matters. Tell them what he’s done for you. You do have that authority. Here’s what the Bible says: “Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

The Holy Spirit is with you at all times, he will provide you with what is needed. My view on sharing the Bible with others is even if you don’t have a vast knowledge of the Bible and all the lessons it has to teach, if you speak out, you’re winning. If you just try to tell others of who God is you’re winning, you’re making a difference, you’re being the salt.

Now be the light. “How can I do that?” - simply by loving yourself and loving your neighbor. Show this dark world love. Bring joy where there is sadness. Bring hope where there is brokenness. Show love to those unloved/unlovable people.

Now for the T-shirt. The shirt alone with the design and Bible verse printed on it is meant to be the light. As you wear the shirt people will see it and wonder what it means. Hopefully they will ask, leading to the salt. You get to tell them about this verse and little bit of the Bible, and hopefully who Jesus is. Or maybe they will just see him through you. You may be the only Bible anyone ever reads, so what Bible are you presenting the world?
